Travel Clinic Services

The Northern California Travel Clinic, directed by Erika M. Steffe MD since 1989, offers a full line of services to customers traveling to foreign countries where exposure to illnesses may occur. The International Society of Travel Medicine indicates that up to 50% of travelers to developing countries will experience a health problem during their trip.

A visit to our travel clinic involves a discussion of anticipated exposures and how to avoid them. In addition, we will recommend vaccinations or medication that will reduce the risk of becoming infected. All recommended vaccines are available at the time of your visit, including yellow fever.

Travelers will receive an immunization record that includes any legal documentation, if required, to place with their passport. A letter detailing recommended strategies to avoid serious illness, including malaria, will be given as well.

Clients traveling again are encouraged to call us and check if further vaccinations are necessary. There is no charge for this service. If all you need on your next trip is a malaria prescription, we will provide you with one for a nominal charge over the phone, eliminating a trip to the doctor. If you need additional vaccinations for your new destination, we will provide this at a reduced office visit rate.

An additional new service we now offer is a travel clinic questionnaire. By filling out this four page questionnaire, which may be downloaded from this website, and either faxed or mailed back to the office (to ensure confidentiality), we will be able to document for you what vaccinations and prescriptions are recommended or required for your trip. It is very detailed, and most customers may prefer to simply visit our office. However, the questionnaire can be filled out by individuals living anywhere in the US. There is a charge for this service (see fee schedule). If the client then chooses to come to see the doctor in addition to sending in the questionnaire, the questionnaire fee will be subtracted from our usual travel visit charges (this does not apply to vaccine fees, which are separate and additional to the questionnaire or office visit fee). We can usually send you the vaccine information you have requested within five working days.

Urgent appointments are often available, although we do recommend that you receive your vaccinations at least two weeks prior to travel. We are also knowledgeable about working with large and small corporations conducting international business. Clients relocating to other countries may wish to use our services as well.

As travel related medical appointments are usually not covered by insurance, we request payment (VISA, Mastercard, checks or good old fashioned cash) at the time of service. We can provide you a superbill on request, to submit to your insurance for reimbursement.

If you are unclear whether vaccinations are indicated for your destination, we recommend visiting the CDC website at www.cdc.gov/travel.
